Czech Vignette Exemptions 2026 – Who Doesn’t Need One?
If you’re planning to drive in the Czech Republic, you’ll usually need a motorway vignette before using the country’s toll roads. However, some vehicles qualify for official Czech motorway toll exemptions and may not need to pay the standard charge at all.
These exemptions depend on vehicle type and, in some cases, require prior registration in the official system. It’s also important to understand where the vignette applies, as it is required on most motorways and selected high-speed road sections across the Czech network. Driving without a valid vignette where required can result in automatic fines through camera-based enforcement.
This guide explains Czech motorway exemptions, when registration is still needed and what to check before travelling. Do You Need a Vignette to Drive in the Czech Republic?
There are few Czech motorway toll exemptions, and if you are using most motorways (D-roads) or expressways in the Czech Republic, you will need a valid e-vignette.
It’s not required at the border itself, but it becomes mandatory as soon as you join a tolled motorway section. You can buy your Czech e-vignette online in just a few minutes before you travel, so your journey is covered from the moment you enter the motorway network.
Check how much a vignette costs for the duration of your trip and validate using our Czech vignette validity checker so you can choose the right validity period for your stay.
Which Vehicles Are Exempt from the Czech Vignette?
Some vehicles are exempt from the Czech vignette fee, but the rules vary depending on the vehicle category and, in some cases, whether the exemption has been registered in advance.
The table below summarises the main Czech vignette exempt vehicles for 2026.
| Vehicle type | Exempt? | Registration needed? |
|---|---|---|
| Motorcycles (2 or 3 wheels) | Yes | No |
| Electric vehicles (BEV) | Yes | Yes |
| Hydrogen vehicles | Yes | Yes |
| Plug-in hybrids | No | No |
| Petrol & diesel passenger cars | No | No |
| Campervans / motorhomes under 3.5t | No | No |
| Vehicles over 3.5t* | Separate toll system | No |
| Historic vehicles (30+ **years) | Yes | Yes |
| Disabled badge holder vehicles (Czech ZTP / ZTP/P only)*** ** | Yes | Yes |
| Trailers & caravans**** | Yes | No |
* Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes do not buy a vignette; they fall under the separate distance-based MYTO CZ electronic toll system, which requires an on-board unit on “M”-marked roads.
** Under § 20a(1)(h) of Act No. 13/1997 Coll. (Czech), the exemption applies only to holders of a ZTP or ZTP/P card issued in the Czech Republic, and only if the vehicle’s registered keeper is the disabled person or someone close to them. No registration is needed — the card is simply shown during a roadside check. Foreign disability badges do not qualify, so visitors from abroad need a standard vignette.
*** Historic vehicles qualify only with Czech special historic registration plates and a historic vehicle licence. Foreign classic-car plates, such as the German ‘H’ plate, are not exempt. If you drive a foreign-registered classic car you need to buy a standard vignette.
**** Trailers and caravans are exempt, but the towing vehicle still requires a valid vignette.
The full list of exemption categories is published on the official exempt vehicles page of eDálnice, the Czech state e-vignette portal.
Eco Vehicle Exemptions: EVs, Hydrogen & Hybrid Cars
Fully electric (BEV) and hydrogen-powered vehicles are exempt from the Czech vignette. How the exemption is applied depends on where the car is registered: vehicles on Czech ‘EL’ plates are exempt automatically, while foreign-registered vehicles must be registered with the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure before using toll sections. Driving on a tolled motorway before the exemption is processed risks a fine — even in an electric car. Please note that registration of electric vehicles can take up to 3 days.
Plug-in hybrids are no longer exempt: since a 2024 rule change, PHEVs with CO₂ emissions of up to 50 g/km buy a discounted eco-vignette at 25% of the standard price, and vehicles running on CNG or biomethane pay 50%. The tariff categories are defined in the official payment conditions (Article XIII).
How to Register a Czech Vignette Exemption
Certain exempt vehicles still need to be recorded in the Czech electronic toll system before motorway travel to ensure it is recognised during enforcement checks.
Registering a Czech vignette exemption is straightforward and can be completed in a few simple steps:
- Open the exemption notification e-form on eDálnice, or download the PDF form for electric and hydrogen vehicles (there is a separate form for other exemption categories).
- Complete the form and select your exemption reason — for an EV, “vehicle powered solely by electricity”.
- Sign it in one of the three accepted ways: (a) a qualified electronic signature; (b) authorised conversion of the printed, signed form at a Czech Point office (Czech); or (c) a notarised handwritten signature sent by post. A plain scan of an ordinary signature is rejected — this is the step most foreign drivers stumble on.
- Attach the supporting documents — for the eco exemption, the vehicle registration certificate (both sides).
- Submit by email to epodatelna@edalnice.cz or via Czech data box ws5mh9w.
- Approval is confirmed by email, typically within a few working days.
- Before you set off, confirm your plate is recorded as exempt using the validity check — enforcement is automatic by camera, so an unprocessed exemption means a fine.
Approval is confirmed by email, typically within a few working days.
Once approved, the Czech Republic toll exemption is recorded in the electronic toll system and linked to the vehicle’s registration plate for automatic recognition during motorway enforcement checks.
Registration is free of charge and no physical certificate or sticker is issued as the system is fully digital. Everything is stored electronically in the Czech toll system and checked automatically during enforcement.
