The European Motorway Stop Index: The Best and Worst Motorway Stops in Europe

On a long motorway drive, the stops matter almost as much as the road. Drivers pull in for fuel, a hot meal, a clean toilet, or a quiet place to park for a few minutes before the next stretch. Motoring clubs inspect a few stops in a handful of countries, but no one has compared motorway stops across Europe.

Czechvignette.cz, an independent reseller of the Czech vignette, ranked 5,363 motorway stops in 26 European countries on more than 7 million Google ratings and more than 300,000 written reviews. Service stations, rest areas, and fuel and food stops are all included, and each side of the motorway counts as a separate stop. The report names Europe's ten best-rated and ten lowest-rated stops, shows what drivers complain about and praise, ranks the countries by the rating of their typical stop, and lists every country's best and worst stops.

Key findings

MOP Rudnik Zachód, on Poland's S19 near Kraśnik, is Europe's best-rated motorway stop, at 4.72 stars. Poland has six of Europe's ten best-rated stops, Bulgaria has two, and Spain and Romania have one each.
Area di parcheggio Costa Gaia Nord, a rest area on Sicily's A29 near Alcamo, is Europe's lowest-rated motorway stop, at 2.15 stars. France has six of Europe's ten lowest-rated stops.
Poland's typical motorway stop rates 4.30 stars, the highest of the 23 countries with at least 10 ranked stops, just ahead of Lithuania's (4.28) and Slovakia's (4.27). Belgium's typical stop is the lowest of the 23 at 3.78, a fraction below Italy's (3.79).
Toilets are the biggest source of complaints across Europe, at 23% of all complaints in written reviews. Staff and service come next at 14%, and they're also the most praised theme.
Toilets make up 33% of all complaints at German motorway stops, the highest share of any country. They're the main complaint at eight of Germany's ten lowest-rated stops, and Germany ranks 21st of the 23 ranked countries.
Moto runs seven of the ten lowest-rated motorway services in the UK. That's about twice its share of the network: Moto operates 32 of the UK's 92 ranked services.

What drivers complain about and praise

Across Europe, 45% of written reviews contain at least one complaint and 50% contain praise. The table below shows what those complaints and that praise are about, and each column adds up to 100%.

Toilets are the biggest single source of complaints, at 23% of all complaints, followed by staff and service at 14% and prices at 10%. Safety and security, parking, and fuel and EV charging each account for about 4% to 6%.

Staff and service draw the most praise, at 18% of all praise, then toilets at 15%, then cleanliness and parking. Toilets are near the top of both lists. Prices make up about one in ten complaints but only about one in thirty compliments.

Plain rest areas take seven of Poland's ten best places, and cleanliness is the main praise at seven of the ten. MOP Rudnik Zachód on the S19 southbound near Kraśnik leads the list, and Poland's typical stop is the best of the 23 ranked countries. Parking Kostomłoty on the A4 westbound near Kąty Wrocławskie is the lowest-rated. Showers make up 9% of complaints, against a European average of 3%.

Fifteen of its sixteen ranked stops are fuel stations with a shop but no hot food, led by the Orlen station on the A1 eastbound near Būgai, while the Emsi station on the A1 westbound near Ariogala is the lowest-rated. Staff and service are the most common complaints and also the most common praise. Staff and service make up 29% of complaints, more than twice the European average of 14%.

Romania

Seven of Romania's ten lowest-rated stops are MOL stations, although MOL runs fewer than a third of the country's ranked stops. The very lowest is the MOL station on the A2 westbound near Siminoc. Parcare Unirea on the A10 northbound near Unirea is the best-rated, though it is rated on its public toilet listing. Part of the A10 next to it was closed for repairs from July 2026, so drivers should check access before planning a stop. Romania's typical stop comes fourth of the 23 ranked countries. Staff and service draw both the most complaints and the most praise, making up 29% of complaints, about twice the European average of 14%.

All ten of Austria's best stops are plain rest areas, while its ten worst are five rest areas, four full-service stations and one fuel stop. Rastplatz Wullersdorf on the S3 northbound near Wullersdorf is the best-rated. The lowest-rated is Raststation Walserberg Nord, Shell on the A1 westbound near Wals, rated on its Shell station listing. Austria comes fifth of the 23 ranked countries. Toilets are the most common complaint and the most common praise, while prices make up 14% of complaints and showers 9%, against European averages of 10% and 3%.

Eight of Croatia's ten best stops are full-service stations, and three are Tifon stations, although Tifon has only a small share of the country's stops (7 of 90). Moto runs seven of the UK's ten lowest-rated services, although it operates only about a third of the UK's ranked services, while Westmorland runs four of the ten best. Moto's Washington services on the A1(M) southbound is the best-rated, with the two sides of Gloucester services second and third. The lowest-rated is the northbound side of Moto's Lancaster services on the M6 near Bay Horse. In the UK, prices are the most common complaint, making up 17% of complaints, against a European average of 10%, while staff and service draw the most praise.

Six of France's ten lowest-rated stops are rest areas. The lowest is Aire de la Coulerouze on the A20 northbound near Bessines-sur-Gartempe. Reviews since late August 2026 say the second-lowest, Aire d'Entrange, is closed for renovation, so its rating describes the toilets before the works. The best-rated is Aire de Passy Mont-Blanc on the A40 westbound near Domancy, a toilets-and-picnic rest area rated mostly by truck drivers who praise the Mont Blanc view and quiet overnight parking. Toilets draw the most complaints and the most praise, and safety and security make up 10% of complaints, against a European average of 6%.

All ten of the lowest-rated stops in the Netherlands are Shell stations, including the very lowest, Verzorgingsplaats Peulwijk Oost, Shell on the A4 northbound near Strijp, and toilets are the main complaint at five of the ten. The best-rated is Parkeerplaats Westkop on the N59 eastbound near Bruinisse, a waterside parking lot whose public toilet has been out of order for years, where reviews praise the independent snack van. Toilets are the most common complaint, while staff and service draw the most praise.

Spain

Eight of Spain's ten best stops are fuel stations without hot food. The list is led by Moeve Castañeda on the A-8 westbound near Puente Viesgo, a full-service station with 103 ratings. Second is Plenergy Fontellas on the A-68 westbound near Fontellas, a low-cost station with toilets but no shop or restaurant, where reviews praise cheap fuel and helpful attendants. The lowest-rated is Agla Carmona on the A-4 southbound near Carmona, an independent family-run station where nearly all one-star reviews complain about staff or about being refused the toilet without a purchase. Staff and service draw both the most complaints and the most praise.

Germany

Nine of Germany's ten lowest-rated stops are rest areas, and toilets are the main complaint at eight of them. The lowest is Raststätte Grunewald, Esso on the A115 southbound near Kleinmachnow, rated on its Esso station listing. The second-lowest is Rastplatz Hohe Wart on the A67 northbound near Raunheim, where reviewers say the toilet block has been locked for years and the portable toilets were removed in 2026, leaving parking only. Rastplatz Ostseeblick Süd on the A1 eastbound near Heiligenhafen is the best-rated. Toilets draw the most complaints and the most praise at German stops.

Italy

Italy's typical motorway stop is the second-lowest of the 23 ranked countries, just ahead of Belgium's. Its lowest-rated stop, Area di parcheggio Costa Gaia Nord on the A29 westbound near Alcamo, is also Europe's lowest, and nearly all of its recent written reviews complain, mostly about trash or the toilets. The best-rated is Area di parcheggio Campiolo Est on the A23 eastbound near Moggio di Sotto, a small scenic parking lot whose toilets and shop are at the Campiolo Ovest service area across the road, reached through an underpass.

Staff and service draw both the most complaints and the most praise, prices make up 16% of complaints against a European average of 10%, and toilets are the main complaint at three of the ten worst.

Belgium

Safety and security make up 13% of complaints at Belgian stops, more than twice the European average of 6%, and five of the ten lowest-rated are rest areas. The lowest is Aire de Heppignies on the E42 westbound near Heppignies, which Google and OpenStreetMap call Aire des Amoudries; reviewers describe a bare truck stop without the restaurant and toilets the official listing describes. Aire de Verlaine Nord on the E42 westbound near Verlaine is the best-rated, just ahead of Ruisbroek, TotalEnergies on the R0 northbound near Beersel (both 4.19). Belgium's typical stop rates 3.78, the lowest of the 23 ranked countries and just behind Italy's 3.79; Belgian stops also average 3.72 against Italy's 3.78, and 18.5% of Belgian stops rate under 3.5 stars, about twice Italy's 9.3%. In Belgium, toilets are the most common complaint, while parking draws the most praise.

Food and drink dominate Finnish reviews in both directions: they're the most common complaint and the most common praise, and they make up 20% of complaints, about three times the European average of 7%. Opening hours make up 5% of complaints, more than twice the European average of 2%. Finland has only 8 ranked stops, too few to be ranked against the other countries.

Tuuliharja, Neste on the 4 northbound near Orimattila is the best-rated stop. The lowest-rated, Tuuliruusu, Neste on the 4 southbound near Mäntsälä, was rebuilt and partly closed in 2025 and gained a new restaurant in November 2025, so older reviews describe the station before the works.

Methodology

We looked at the motorway stops in the 27 EU countries, the UK, Switzerland, and Norway, from full service stations to fuel stops and plain rest areas. We started with each country's official list of motorway stops (where one exists), added data from OpenStreetMap, and located every stop on Google Maps. Each side of the motorway counts as a separate stop, and stops that drivers have to leave the motorway to reach were left out. We couldn't find an official list for Bulgaria, Lithuania, or Romania, and a few Finnish rest areas aren't on Google Maps, so those four lists may be incomplete. In France, Italy, Portugal and Spain, the official lists cover only fuel stops, so rest areas there come from OpenStreetMap.

Stops are ranked by their average Google rating. Where a stop has more than one Google Maps listing, we used the stop's own listing, and where there were duplicates, the one with the most ratings. When a listing's name is only a brand, such as a fuel or restaurant brand, Google's own category for it decides whether it is the stop or a business inside it. Stops whose only listing is a restaurant or other business were left out. A stop needs at least 100 ratings on that one listing, and its rating is the exact average of that listing's 1 to 5 star ratings. We ranked 5,363 stops, with more than 7 million Google ratings between them. Countries are ranked by their typical stop rating, the middle rating among all their ranked stops, and only countries with at least 10 ranked stops are ranked. Estonia, Latvia, Malta, and Cyprus have no stops that qualify.

To see what drivers complain about and praise, we sorted more than 300,000 written Google reviews from the last two years, from the same listing used for each stop's rating, into themes such as toilets, staff, and prices. Each stop counts equally in these figures, and only stops with at least 10 written reviews are included. Data was collected in October 2026.
