Buy Vignette

Since the beginning of 2021, a new regulation has become effective for motorists in the Czech Republic. It is now only possible to buy the vignette for the Czech Republic online. The vignette in form of a sticker, as you might be familiar with from previous trips, was abolished with the new regulation. Like in Slovenia, Bulgaria, and other EU countries, only the e-vignette is now available in the Czech Republic. For travelers who used to stop at one of the nearby gas stations, this will certainly lead to a change in thinking at first. However, the electronic vignette has several advantages that drivers will certainly not want to do without. We will present all the important information about the vignette and online purchase.

Do I need a vignette in the Czech Republic?

The question of whether you need to buy a vignette to drive through the Czech Republic is superfluous for most travelers. Vacationers want to reach their destination - either in the Czech Republic or in a neighbouring country - as quickly as possible and without detours. To this end, most drivers use the country's motorways and expressways. In the Czech Republic, all roads designated Dálnice "D" (motorways) and Rychlostní silnice "R" (expressways) are subject to tolls. On rural roads, motor vehicles are exempt from the toll. On the way, you will not be informed about the toll roads by signs. Only the roads that are toll-free have special signs titled "Bez Poplatku".

Many German car drivers assume that you can also buy a Czech vignette in digital form at the ADAC. However, this is not correct. The automobile club is not one of the sales points.

Edalnice

The edalnice.cz website is an official local provider. However, compared to the previous site mentioned, there are limitations when it comes to payment options. You can choose between a payment card and a bank transfer.

Caution: if you choose the latter, you must consider the exchange rate. If the wrong amount is transferred, it can lead to a chargeback - and thus to problems on the Czech roads.

Which period should the vignette be valid for?

Before placing the online vignette in the shopping cart, you must decide on a validity period. The special aspect of the "new" e-vignettes is that there is no consumer protection period. The validity starts immediately after the online purchase has been successfully completed. So, nothing stands in the way of your journey through the Czech Republic!

  • 10-day vignette

The 10-day vignette is the option usually chosen by holidaymakers. It is suitable for drivers who are either only planning a short stay or are not staying in the Czech Republic at all.

  • Monthly vignette

The "1-month" option is available to drivers who are either staying in the Czech Republic for several weeks or are traveling through the country again at a later stage to return to Germany.

  • Yearly vignette

The "new" vignette for 1 year is no longer tied to a full calendar year. The period of use (365 days) can be chosen freely. That’s the perfect option if you travel to or through the Czech Republic not just once, but several times a year.

Which vehicles do not need a vignette for the Czech Republic?

The regulations described above regarding the requirement to have a vignette only apply to certain vehicles. These are motorcycles, passenger cars, or "light" motor homes - in fact, all vehicles with a total weight of up to 3.5 tons. If you plan to use the Czech motorways or expressways with a different vehicle, you should take the following regulations into account.

Buy Vignette

Vehicles over 3.5 tons

Vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons are not required to have a vignette. However, this does not mean that "heavy" vehicles can use certain sections of the route after the border crossing free of charge. The Czech system stipulates that tolls for trucks are calculated based on the distance traveled. The so-called distance toll is measured with the help of a small box ("billien") installed in the front part of the vehicle.

Vehicles with alternative drive systems

There are indeed some exceptions in the Czech Republic as far as the obligation to have a vignette is concerned. Cars with electric drive, plug-in hybrids, or hydrogen cars are exempted from the motorway toll. However, a special form must be at hand during possible spot-checks by the police.
